Annette Lyon’s ‘dedication to our students and families was deeply appreciated’
LYNDEN — A Lynden school bus driver has died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident Thursday morning.
At approximately 8 a.m. May 1, Lynden School District Bus No. 24 was involved in a collision in the 2000 block of Main Street, west of Guide Meridian near Lynden Door.
Lynden Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and other responding agencies investigated the scene, which necessitated a closure both west and east long Main Street at the site of the accident.
According to a news release from the Lynden Police Department, preliminary investigation indicates that a white SUV traveling eastbound on Main Street collided with a Lynden School District bus traveling westbound. Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after the incident was reported. Both Lynden police and the Lynden School District have confirmed that bus driver Annette Lyon died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
“Annette had been a valued member of the district since 2021, and her dedication to our students and families was deeply appreciated,” David VanderYacht, the district’s superintendent, emailed the Lynden Tribune in a district statement. “She will be greatly missed by our entire Lynden Schools community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Annette’s family, friends and colleagues, especially her team at the bus garage.”
No students were on board or involved in the accident, the district confirmed.
“Our teachers and other school staff are aware of the incident and will be prepared to support students and staff who need help processing their grief,” the district’s statement read. “Please keep Annette’s loved ones and the Lynden Schools family in your thoughts during this difficult time.”
According to Lynden police, the driver of the SUV was transported to PeaceHealth Medical Center for treatment. Although the cause of the accident remains under investigation, it is still unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the accident or has dashcam footage from the area during that time to contact the Lynden Police Department at 360-354-2828.
Due to the ongoing investigation, no other details will be released at this time by Lynden police.
